My name is Marcus Santamaria. That's me with my family in the picture above. After I met and married my wife, Elena, we decided to move to Mexico to be near her family. But I didn't speak a word of Spanish! I needed to learn the language so that I could interact with her family and friends.

But I had another motivation, too...

As an English teacher, I absolutely needed to learn the language so that I didn't feel like a fraud! I mean, how could I possibly teach English as a second language when I didn't even know one myself?

My shame drove me to search endlessly for a better way of learning and teaching. Believe me, learning Spanish was not easy for me...I struggled! Eventually I discovered what I had suspected all along: the problem was not me, but the methods I was using.

Once I discovered what's really important for communication, (you'll be amazed at how much of what is normally taught actually gets in the way of communication) and how to best use the mind for rapid learning, I became fluent in Spanish and very successful at teaching, too!

I am now a very successful language teacher - one of the most respected and highest paid in Latin America. The Joy of Learning How to Speak Spanish

The problem that many people have with learning Spanish, or any other language, is that they approach it as an all-or-nothing matter. They believe that until they can speak it fluently, they haven't accomplished anything with all of their studying.

If this is your attitude, you need to jettison it right now. The joy of learning how to speak Spanish lies in being able to communicate a little more every day. The rewards are both incremental and ongoing.

If you are persistent both in studying the language, and in going out and actually talking to people, you will know the satisfaction of being better this week than you were last week. You will have the rich experience of finding yourself suddenly understanding conversations that would have left you baffled just a short time before.

You will naturally start your language adventure by learning to recognize and repeat a handful of words and simple phrases, such as greetings. You will progress to being able to make requests and to respond to simple questions. Eventually you will be engaging in the give-and-take of real conversations.

Learning how to speak Spanish is not an end point. Even after you achieve a level where you may consider yourself fluent, you can set new goals, such as learning the local dialects and idioms to be found in the different Spanish speaking countries.

Think of learning Spanish as a fascinating journey with no final station at which you must arrive. It will make the process easier and infinitely more enjoyable. Even if you flunked it in high school, or you think you have no language aptitude, you can learn to speak Spanish.

Learning How To Speak Spanish Effectively

Learning how to speak Spanish is not difficult. But it does require a sensible approach. So many people try, and yet they fail miserably at learning how to speak Spanish! Why is this?

The first question to ask is why you are trying to learn Spanish in the first place! Apart from students at school or college taking Spanish classes for exams, most people who are learning the language are doing so for conversational purposes. They are learning to speak Spanish so that they can hold conversations. Perhaps with family or relatives, or perhaps for an upcoming trip! Whatever the reason, their goal is conversational Spanish and not technically correct academic Spanish.

In many cases, they fail because they take an academic approach to a non-academic problem. Strangely, taking an academic approach is the worst way to go about learning how to speak Spanish. An academic approach will teach you all about verbs and conjugation. An academic approach is great for expanding vocabulary. But an academic approach falls short when it comes to holding conversations.

You really need a more natural approach for leaning Spanish at the conversational level. You need much more exposure to sentence structure and conversational scenarios.

So while the failure rate sits at about 85% overall, those who take a more natural approach have much higher success rates. That's correct, only about one in eight who start out generally succeed at learning Spanish in spoken form.

The more natural approach involves real or simulated immersion in spoken Spanish from the very beginning of the learning Spanish endeavor. The most practical way to get this much-needed exposure is to use an online Spanish course that includes effective audio modules.

This can be supplemented using other forms of immersion as well. These are freely available and really help. Listen to Spanish radio! Watch Spanish TV! When you are watching a DVD, watch the Spanish language version with English sub-titles and follow along. You will be amazed at how much real Spanish you pick up, as long as you have used the online Spanish course to give you some basics.

Not all courses are effective, so you need to be careful in your selection. You have to make certain that the audio components of the course will give you the right type of immersion. Audio tool to help you pronounce individual words are sometimes billed as immersion, but that is not the type of immersion which is effective!

Learning Spanish is not hard. The only hard part is carefully choosing an effective approach. Get that right and learning how to speak Spanish is a breeze!
